Eliab ben Zabdi is ten years old when the first Passover changes everything.

Years pass. Eliab grows from an uncertain child into a man shaped by service, friendship, family, grief and responsibility. He watches people he loves remain faithful, struggle, rebel and die. He marries, becomes a father, takes up his calling as a Levite and learns that faith is not only found in spectacular moments of parted seas and burning mountains, but in the quiet decision to keep walking when the miracle has faded from view.

At the heart of the story is a lesson first given to Eliab by his father, Zabdi: the promise is found not only in reaching the destination, but “in the walking, in the listening, in the trusting — even when the way seems hard.”

The great events of Israel’s journey form the biblical foundation of the story, while Eliab, his family, friendships and personal experiences provide an imagined perspective through which readers can encounter those events afresh. Each chapter is anchored to the biblical passages behind the events it explores.
